We all know that there are many other more interesting and valuable topics to talk about. But, money is something that is in our control, and rather than creating more problems for us, we can make it work with us. The key here is talking – being comfortable to chat about your position and habits around this topic is as therapeutic as talking about any other other issues in life.
Prepare For Difficulties
It is important to remember that when things are alright we like to ignore many problems. It makes sense – there is no discomfort in our lives to be worried about. Also, being aware of more issues in life seems very counter-intuitive when we are trying to make things easier for us. But, money is not an easy topic.
As a result, when life suddenly happens, we loose the things we were so attached to and only then we become so acutely aware of all of our problems.
- Passes information from one person to the other about the things they might need to try or to avoid (like any other conversation).
- Revises some aspects you might have not paid attention to lately.
- Releases stress around a certain issue.
I’ve seen and heard many of my friends and family members being stressed about money either openly – telling me that they are worried, or very discretely – worrying about other things that stern from their stress around money. And, to be honest the only reason why I can understand them is because I’ve been there myself.
However, some researches found that not talking about money keeps you poor. I think this has some truth to it because this habit comes from the place of scarcity – you fear that talking about money might get you robbed of what you already have, make you seem boring or too serious.
While talking to your friends about all the things you want to talk about, you can slip in something like ‘Oh, and I saved £50 so far, so who wants a takeaway?’. This alone reinforces positive feelings about your money management which has a motivation effect on your next financial decision.
It is difficult for many creative people to commit themselves to seemingly rigid systems of keeping yourself on the track of achieving their aspirations. Talking about money to others is one of the many easy and creative ways to keep yourself accountable.
